Kodiak, Alaska is an island southwest of Anchorage in the Gulf of Alaska. It is known as the "Emerald Isle," it's the second-largest island in the U.S. and a hub for fishing, wildlife viewing and outdoor recreation.
While Kodiak is limited in shopping compared to other units, it makes up in beauty and community engagement. Even if you aren't an outdoorsy person, there is always something to do!
Throughout the year, Kodiak temperature ranges from 25 degrees to 62 degrees. The weather ranges from sunshine, rain, snow and ice. During the summer, the sun stays up for around 18 hours and in the winter you will have 6.5 hours of sunlight.
The Exchange has deals to order snow tires so we would recommend waiting to purchase snow tires (if you would like to) until you get on island.
Rain gear is a must (including boots - consider getting a pair of XtraTuffs or Bogs).
Consider buying larger items (furniture, etc) in the lower 48 before you move to Kodiak as these items are more expensive to ship to the island.
A sense of adventure! Kodiak is truly what you make of it. There is a great community here that is ready to welcome you with open arms!
